We spent hours of our childhood fascinated by ant farms. I sourced my ants from surrounding ant hills near my house and Laura mostly got the mail order ants. My ant farms would occasionally become battle grounds when I mixed ants of separate colonies together but mostly we enjoyed just watching our ants dig and dig and dig.
I can’t recall the last time I saw anyone using an ant farm and it seems that ants are looked at as the enemy near most homes and are quickly eradicated.
But for those of you who long for ant farms and would love to introduce them to your child or grand kids you still can. Uncle Milton sells the classic giant ant farm pictured above as well as smaller versions and the new versions that use gel.
If you are a woodworker or looking for an ambitious DIY project then you could make one yourself like this grandfather did for his grandkids.
